about

It is no secret that the tragedy, better yet the MURDERS of innocent black men and women all around the world struck a chord within me to create this album. But it was having to witness the brutal murder of George Floyd which inspired the energy presented within this album, in order for me to create it.

I know that George needed me to talk for him and allow the music to be a channel in which his words could manifest itself into musical creation; and this has been the quickest turnaround for an album I have ever created.

Two weeks, 20 songs, 20 beats (some of which didn’t make the final cut) were what I had in mind for this album. Originally, this was called “We Will Not Be Silenced: Black Lives Matter” and I knew who I could call on to make this project work. Unfortunately, most of the collaborations I had in mind fell flat but I am absolutely grateful to the artists that gave up their time and invested their energy into making this work. I’m no stranger to working quickly, but to create art translated from the pain of witnessing George breathing for his last breath, was extremely difficult to do.

I would’ve been out on the streets protesting, but instead of using my fists... Why not use my voice?

As a black man first and foremost, and secondly – being a music artist, the most powerful way of protesting for #BlackLivesMatter is through doing what I do best. Using my voice through song.

I’d like to thank God... The Universe, my Angels, ancestors, Higher Self, Spirit Guides, Jesus Christ himself for the creation of this album. I knew this is what they needed me to do, but the divine flow and timing of this album was all from them. Thank you for being my eyes and ears, and for giving me the strength to even start and finish this album.

I’d like to thank Melanie Nicole Barker for creating an album cover that will forever stand as one of the most important historical masterpieces of all time. Big thank you to Cordelia Goode for introducing me to Melanie, which led to such an important yet fulfilling relationship that I hope will last a lifetime.

I’d like to thank Jess Mingo for being the source of inspiration, the seed that gave birth to this idea in the first place. Who would’ve known that a song from you would’ve resulted in me creating a full-length album that would perfectly capture the very essence of blackness?

I’d like to thank the artists that I collaborated with: Erin James, Nathan Kelleher, Rhys Cummins, Freddy Detchou, Michael Jad Azkoul, Jon Clark, Eboni Burke, Jewel Clark, Ceezlin, Abiola Otusanya, XUMA, David Tribe & Eben Roddis. Thank you all for believing in me enough to be a part of something so incredibly important.

I’d like to thank my not-so-little brother... The genius, the One with the most technical ears I have ever seen... The literal JME to my Skepta... K, Le Maestro; for investing his musical and technical ear, in making the music sound as full as possible. Thank you for investing your time and energy into something that is powerful and something which struck a chord within me.

I’d like to thank my managers Gary James & Dan Evans for their trust and faith in me doing this album. Thank you for letting me lead. Thank you for letting me fly and to spread my wings in making this happen. You both had enough faith in me to let me take a deep dive into this album and to create it the way that I envisioned it.

To be black... Is to have soul.

To be black... Is to have a love that goes beyond measure.

To be black... Is to be colourful.

To be black... Is the most beautiful thing in the world.

To be black... Is to have a rhythm that naturally flows through your veins whenever you dance to the beat of your own drum.

To be black... Is to be YOU.

I dedicate this album to the legacies, brilliance and eternal memories of every black life that has been unjustly murdered through racism. I WILL say all your names.

I AM... UNAPOLOGETICALLY BLACK.
